Creating music in the 21st century: an open conversation with David Lang Sep. 16
The Office of Career Strategies will kick off the new school year with an animated conversation featuring composer David Lang, the founder of Bang on a Can and a YSM faculty member. The event will take place Monday, September 16 at 4:30 pm in Morse Recital Hall.
The event will be moderated by Astrid Baumgardner, Coordinator of Career Strategies, together with three YSM students: pianist Suzana Bartal, composer Dan Schlosberg, and clarinetist Ashley Smith.
David Lang will share his insights on creating music in the twenty-first century. Participants will hear how he started off as an outsider, founded Bang on a Can, and grew into one of today’s most beloved and performed composers. Lang has an original voice defies easy categorization and is constantly evolving. His work ranges from chamber, orchestral, and instrumental music to opera and vocal, multi-media, dance, and theatre. Because of his collaborations not only with musicians but also with artists from the world of opera, art song, theatre, dance, film, and the visual arts, David Lang bring a unique perspective on what it means to be an artist in the twenty-first century.
Participants will be able to ask questions, so YSM students are encouraged to RSVP early to secure a spot. The event will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person.
