Guitar Chamber Music features diverse ensembles Dec. 4
The Yale School of Music will present a free Guitar Chamber Music concert on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 8 pm. Directed by faculty member Benjamin Verdery, the concert will showcase diverse chamber ensembles that include guitar.
The concert will feature collaborations with guitar and a variety of other instruments including the bassoon in Maximo Diego Pujol’s Suite Buenos Aires, and the violin in Jürg Kindle’s Quintessence. Jörg Widmann’s Duell is a duet for electric guitar and trombone.
Two duets from the 17th and 18th centuries will be performed on the baroque guitar and the long-necked theorbo: Santiago de Murcia’s Marionas and Alessandro Piccinini’s Ciaccona.
The concert also brings together Verdery’s students in two works for guitar ensemble: Van Stiefel’s multi-movement Cinema Castaneda for four guitars, and Celso Machado’s rollicking Folguedo for eight guitars.
The performers are graduate students who have come from around the world to study at the Yale School of Music. The concert takes place in Morse Recital Hall, located in Sprague Hall at 470 College St., New Haven. This concert is free and open to the public. About Student Chamber Music at YSM
The Yale School of Music is unique in that all performance faculty coach chamber music, and all students are involved in chamber music for their entire tenure at the School. Ensembles come together each semester and receive weekly coachings from distinguished faculty and guest artists. Chamber groups often perform in the Lunchtime Chamber Music concerts, which take place at both Morse Recital Hall and the Center for British Art, and in the Vista series, in which performances are enhanced by spoken commentary on the music. Students also take part in the annual chamber music competition, whose winners are featured in an annual Chamber Music Society concert. Each December, Benjamin Verdery – the guitar professor at the School – presents a concert of Guitar Chamber Music featuring ensembles that he has coached throughout the semester.
