Music in Schools Initiative announces new Winter Festival

Teaching Artist playing trumpet with NHPS students

The Music in Schools Initiative is pleased to announce a brand new program in partnership with the New Haven Public Schools, the MISI Winter Festival.

From Tuesday, February 17 – Friday, February 20, students will participate in instrumental classes, large ensemble rehearsals, private lessons, and other activities. Programming runs from 9:30am to 12:00pm each day at Fair Haven School, with instruction by NHPS music teachers and YSM graduate student teaching artists.

The Festival culminates in a final concert on Friday, February 20 at 11:00am in the Fair Haven School Auditorium.

The Winter Festival was designed to engage beginner students in certain regions of New Haven that MISI programs do not see many students from, as well as to provide enrichment activities for students during their school vacation weeks. This year's Winter Festival is targeting students from the Fair Haven region. Plans for a Spring Festival, also in Fair Haven during the NHPS spring break, are already in the works. Future festivals may target the Dixwell, East Rock, and Hill regions.

The Winter Festival is made possible by a grant from the Alfred & Jane Ross Foundation, and is free of charge to New Haven Public School students.
