David Lang receives honorary doctorate from Ohio State University

David Lang

Composer and YSM faculty member David Lang is one of five individuals honored at The Ohio State University’s spring 2015 commencement. Ceremonies took place Sunday, May 10, in Ohio Stadium. Lang was one of three people given honorary doctorates for their contributions to society and academics

Honorary doctorates were presented to Lang, a composer who won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize; Michael L. J. Appuzo, a New Haven-born Yale graduate who is one of the world’s most respected neurological surgeons; and Kathleen Sebelius, a native Ohioan with a long and distinguished career in public service.

Kate Sheeran appointed Provost and Dean of San Francisco Conservatory of Music

sheeran-kateThe San Francisco Conservatory of Music announced yesterday the appointment of Kate Sheeran as Provost and Dean of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Currently Assistant Dean at Mannes School of Music of The New School, Sheeran takes up her new position on July 1, 2015. She succeeds Robert Fitzpatrick, who retires from the Conservatory after ably serving in this role in an interim capacity since January 2014.

“I am delighted to appoint Kate Sheeran as Provost and Dean of the Conservatory,” said David H. Stull, President of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, as quoted in the announcement. MORE

Haiti’s Minister of Culture visits Yale

On Wednesday, May 6, Dithny Joan Raton, Haiti’s Minister of Culture, and her delegation met with Dean Robert Blocker and Thomas C. Duffy. The group discussed music in Haiti as well as Yale’s possible involvement in the reconstruction of their music infrastructure.
