All-City Honors Ensembles to perform final concert of season
The 2014–15 season of the All-City Honors Ensembles — a major program of the Music in Schools Initiative — will come to a close with a final concert in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall on Saturday, May 30. The concert begins at 6:00 pm and is open to the public. Admission is free, no tickets required.
The All-City Honors Ensembles are comprised of band, orchestra, and chorus programs. Nearly every Saturday afternoon throughout the school year, a total of over 200 New Haven Public School students have been attending rehearsals at Wilbur Cross HS, led by a combination of NHPS music teachers, YSM graduate student Teaching Artists, and special guests. Students range from 4th-12th grade, and are admitted by audition in October. Participants are expected to maintain membership in their schools’ music ensembles as well, if available.
Since the creation of the All-City Honors Chorus in 2010, the All-City Honors Ensembles have continuously expanded to meet the needs of New Haven’s population of young musicians. Last year, the All-City Honors Ensembles held their first full-year season, and each of the Band and Orchestra programs split into two levels — Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, and String Orchestra and Camerata, respectively.
This year, the Chorus also split into two levels — Children’s Choir and Glee Club — and a Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Group, and a variety of other chamber music groups were added. Several new students joined the Ensembles in the spring after participating in the MISI Winter Festival.
