Dmitry Yablonsky Named Conductor Laureate of Jerusalem Symphony

b97832_03bf41b361704541ab0c68b5dce748f9Grammy-nominated conductor and cellist Dmitry Yablonsky ’85 CERT has been named conductor laureate of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. The announcement comes ahead of a United States tour with Maestro Yablonsky and the orchestra from February 23 to March 15, 2016.

The tour will feature Yablonsky as conductor and cello soloist, as well as pianist Fahard Badalbayli and cellist Daniele Akta, and will cover many East Coast states of the U.S., starting in Florida and ending in Massachusetts. MORE

Musical America’s New Artist of the Month: Michael Gilbertson

The annual Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, which ran January 2529, introduced seven young composers whose works, chosen in a competitive screening, were poured over, polished, and finally performed before a paying public. All of these young men and women had something to say, but one in particular stood out.

Michael Gilbertson is a Juilliard grad currently working on his PhD [editor’s note: DMA] in composition at Yale, where he counts Aaron Jay Kernis and Martin Bresnick among his teachers. His Sinfonia, based, as he describes it, on “motives and themes from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons” and excerpted for the purposes of the Institute, combines multiple harmonic strains, in the early 20th-century jazz/impressionist vein, with a solid rhythmic core. Its canvas is vast, enriched with full but never overblown orchestral color. Lines are lyrical, subtly interwoven. Small wonder that Music Director Osmo Vänskä chose it to close the program that bore the fruits of the week’s work. MORE

2016 Music in Schools Winter Festival

IMG_5851For 120 New Haven Public Schools students, vacation from school doesn’t mean taking a break from music.  During the NHPS Winter Break (Feb. 16-19), the Music in Schools Initiative hosted its annual Winter Festival for students across New Haven.  Nineteen Yale School of Music graduate students participated as Teaching Artists, providing instrument-specific instruction, leading sectionals and ensembles, and developing close relationships with their students.
