YSM to host UN Secretary-General April 12

Performances of Jessica Pray '17 MM and Katherine Barnes '16 YC will open the event

On Tuesday, April 12, YSM will host the speech of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Hall. The Secretary-General’s speech is the central event of the UN Global Colloquium of University Presidents hosted by Yale University.

Performances of current YSM student Jessica Pray ’17 MM and Yale College student Katherine Barnes will open this event. Joined by the YSM faculty pianist Douglas Dickson ’89 MMA, Pray will sing a set of songs by Charles Ives, a prominent Yale graduate and American composer, and Barnes will sing a song from the James Weldon Johnson Collection from Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

About Jessica Pray

Jessica Pray

Soprano Jessica Pray, originally from Johnston Iowa, is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in opera performance at the Yale School of Music, studying with Doris Yarick-Cross. Jessica holds a B.M. in Vocal Performance and a B.A. in Ethics and Public Policy from the University of Iowa.

Mainstage credits include the role of Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Yale Opera); Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Pitti-Sing in The Mikado, and cover of Frasquita in Carmen, (Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre); Lydia Larkspur in The Rivals, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Servilia in La Clemenza di Tito, Anna Gomez in The Consul, and Phyllis in Iolanthe, (University of Iowa Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theatre); and Roxie Hart in Chicago: The Musical (Old Capitol Opera).  

Scenes with Yale Opera include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and Ophelie in Hamlet.  Jessica sang the role of Gabriel in Haydn’s Creation with the Yale Glee Club, and was the soprano soloist for Mozart’s Requiem with the University of Iowa choirs and orchestra.  This May, she will sing the role of Pedro in Don Quichotte with Yale Opera.

Katherine Barnes

Soprano Katherine Barnes is a senior at Yale University in Ezra Stiles College pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies. Originally from Friendswood, TX, she studies with Janna Baty at the Yale School of Music.

At Yale, Katherine is active in both musical theater and opera. She has been a board member of the Opera Theatre of Yale College, Yale’s undergraduate opera company, since 2013. Recent credits include the role of Laoula in L’étoile, Laetitia in The Old Maid and the Thief, Gretel inHänsel und Gretel, and Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Opera Theatre of Yale College; Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music with the Yale Drama Coalition; and ensemble member in The Music Man and My Fair Lady with Yale Musical Theater of the Air. After graduation, Katherine plans to pursue a career in casting.
