Music lessons are offered at the School of Music to students in Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the Professional Schools.
Members of the Yale and New Haven communities who are not registered students and wish to hire a School of Music student can submit a request here.
Instruction is available in the following areas: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion, Harp, Piano, Organ, Guitar, Voice, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass.
Students interested in Composition, Choral Conducting, and Orchestral Conducting will find classes in the Department of Music and in the School of Music offered each academic semester.
Most students will receive instruction from graduate students enrolled in the School of Music, and some will study with members of the School of Music Faculty.
Students are enrolled in lessons in one of two ways: (1) Lessons for Credit or (2) Non-credit lessons for a fee. Lessons for credit are offered with faculty approval only, and certain undergraduate theory prerequisites apply. Please note that teaching arrangements are made in the Fall semester and apply for both Fall and Spring semesters.

The application and audition period takes place during the first two weeks of the Fall semester only. Audition typically take place during the first two weeks of the Fall semester.

ALL other returning students need not re-audition but MUST submit a Lesson Contract to Sarita Kwok by email, or in person to Kelly Yamaguchi at the Leigh Hall front desk, no later than the second week of the semester.

10 hours of lessons per semester: $550
6 hours of lessons per semester: $350
Declared music majors in their junior and senior years in Yale College may receive non-credit lessons at a discounted rate: 6 hours of lessons for free or 10 hours of lessons for $275 per semester.
Students taking lessons through the Yale School of Music will have their student accounts billed each semester. Please remember that teaching arrangements are made in the Fall for the entire academic year. Students will be billed in both the Fall and the Spring unless they file a drop form before the deadlines.
Teaching arrangements are made in the Fall for the entire academic year. The Drop form below must be submitted if the student does not intend to continue studying in either Fall or Spring semesters.
There is no charge for dropping lessons by the following dates: Friday, September 27, 2013 for the Fall term and Friday, January 31, 2014 for the Spring term. Students who drop lessons past these dates will NOT be reimbursed.
Refunds are not issued on a per-lesson basis for missed lessons. Lessons cannot be rolled-over from one semester to the next.
