Celebrating the Tokyo String Quartet

The Tokyo String Quartet, which has served on the faculty of the Yale School of Music since 1976, embarks on its final season as a Quartet. The program features music of Webern, Mozart, and Mendelssohn.

Mozart’s Birthday

Performed on his actual birthday, 257 years to the day, Yale celebrates Mozart in the context of composers he influenced and was influenced by. Bach, Beethoven and Kernis join the party.

Serenade and Metamorphosis
Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall

Serenades and their kin, both old and new, take focus in this program featuring Yale faculty, students, and alumni, led by concertmaster Ani Kavafian. The program juxtaposes Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings with a new composition for the same instrumentation by alumnus Matthew Barnson. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings caps off the program.

Hindemith: Master and Prankster

From 1940 to 1953, composer Paul Hindemith served as a member of the faculty at Yale School of Music. Fifty years after Hindemith’s death, Yale pays tribute with a program equal parts profound and whimsical, with works such as the Kammermusik No. 2 alongside rarely-performed parodies.
