The Center for Studies in Music Technology, known colloquially as CSMT (pronounced “kismet”), was designed by musicians for musicians. Jack Vees, the center’s director, has a long career as both a composer and electric bassist.
Besides having the latest state-of-the-art hardware and software, CSMT takes all new students from their own level of experience and allows them to design their own interactive education. Many student composers take advantage of CSMT’s resources for their projects, and numerous performers also turn to CSMT for assistance in working on the repertoire for live instruments with electronics, for example.
In fulfilling its mission to provide both a practical and theoretical knowledge base, CSMT has presented numerous guest artists over the years. CSMT also acts as a guide to Yale’s abundant technological resources, including the Digital Media Center for the Arts.
