Guitar

The guitar program offers broad instruction, with guitarists taking lessons, participating in the weekly studio seminar, working with guest artists, and performing solo and ensemble repertoire.

The weekly guitar seminar includes performances of newly learned solo and chamber music, as well as a variety of lectures. Topics include interpretation, arranging, technique, pedagogy, master class teaching, programming, memory, competitions, recording, and career development. Each year in the course, students are required to write an étude and an arrangement, and to present a lecture of their own.

Before graduating, all guitar students perform a 20-minute outreach concert in New Haven schools. YSM students also have the opportunity to teach young musicians through the Music in Schools Initiative.

Every semester features a guest master class. Recent artists have included Odair Assad, Eliot Fisk, David Russell, SoloDuo, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Raphaella Smits, Roland Dyens, David Leisner, Anthony Newman, and Hopkinson Smith.
