The horn studio in Leigh Hall serves as a home base for students, who practice, rehearse, and research music there. The studio has natural horns — two classical and two baroque — as well as a triple horn available for students to use.
Horn players take private lessons and participate in weekly studio seminars. The seminars often focus on a specific topic, such as études or song transcriptions. Horn players are encouraged to learn as broad a repertoire as possible, including baroque and contemporary music.
In addition to studying solo repertoire, students play in chamber ensembles, New Music New Haven, and the Yale Philharmonia. Additional opportunities include teaching undergraduate lessons, playing in the Yale Cornetto and Sackbut Ensemble, and teaching in the Music in Schools program.
Alumni of the horn studio have performed with organizations such as the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
