Cellist Dmitri Atapine earns awards, faculty appointment

Dmitri AtapineDmitri Atapine ’05MMA, ’06AD has been appointed to the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno. Beginning in September, Atapine will be Assistant Professor of Cello. In the past year he has also been awarded the Top Prize and the Yamaha Corporation Special Prize at the Spanish National Cello Competition.

The First Prize winner at the 2004 Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition (Mexico), Mr. Atapine has since been recognized as an exciting cellist and accomplished chamber musician. 

A regular soloist and recitalist, Mr. Atapine has appeared on some of the world's most prestigious stages, including Zankel and Weill Halls at Carnegie Hall, National Auditorium of Spain, Juan March Foundation (Madrid), Prince Philip Auditorium (Asturias), among many others. Mr. Atapine has performed as a soloist with the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, the Leon Symphony Orchestra, the Gijon Chamber Orchestra, the 'Arche' Chamber Orchestra, and the Yale Philharmonia, as well as the Michigan State University Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras. He is also scheduled to perform in the 2009 season with the exciting new orchestra Oviedo Filarmonia.

Mr. Atapine's prizes and awards include the First (string quartet) and Second (with pianist Hye-Yeon Park) Prizes at the 2008 New England International Chamber Competition, the Grand Prize at the 2007 Plowman Competition as founding member of the Alianza String Quartet, the 2005 Presser Foundation Award, the First Prize and Asturias Symphony Special Prize at the 2003 Llanes International String Competition (Spain), the Yale Woolsey Hall Competition, and the First Prize at the Sahagun International Music Competition at age 13.

Since 2007 Mr. Atapine is the Artistic Director of the International Music Festival of Ribadesella (Spain). Other festival appearances as both soloist and chamber musician include Banff (Canada), Great Mountains Music Festival (South Korea), Miguel Bernal Jimenez Festival (Mexico), the French Academy in Rome (Italy), Aldeburgh (England), Aix-en-Provence (France), Pacific Music Festival (Japan), and Music@Menlo Chamber Music Festival (California). Mr. Atapine's recently recorded CD of showpieces is currently in production for worldwide release by the Urtext Digital label.
