Master class with cellist Tanya Tomkins April 21

April 20, 2012

The distinguished cellist Tanya Tomkins will give an open master class on Saturday, April 21, from 1:00 to 4:45 pm. The class takes place in Parker Hall, Room 408 in Leigh Hall (435 College Street) and is  sponsored by the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments.

A member of the faculty of the American Bach Soloists Summer Academy, Tanya Tomkins has also given master classes at Juilliard, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and San Jose State University.

Tanya Tomkins returned to the United States in 1998 after living in Holland for 14 years, where she discovered that certain music sounds amazing when performed on the historic instruments for which it was composed. This discovery has informed her diverse career as soloist and chamber musician, and is reflected in her virtuoso performances on both baroque and modern cellos.

Hailed as “a cellist with a very special and unusual intensity” by NRC Handelsblad (The Netherlands), Tomkins has also been called “a performer who combines an intense dramatic fire with Apollonian poise” by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Tanya is the first cellist ever to win the international Bodky Competition for Early Music Soloists.  As an active soloist and chamber recitalist, Tanya has performed to critical acclaim at Lincoln Center, the Library of Congress, San Francisco Performances, and the Concertgebouw Kleine Zaal, among many other venues.

Currently a principal cellist for San Francisco’s Philharmonia Baroque and Portland Baroque, Tanya has also performed as soloist with both orchestras. Tanya also performs with the American Bach Soloists, Voices of Music, the Oregon Bach Festival, Music in the Vineyards Festival, Olympic Chamber Music Festival, and the Moab Chamber Music Festival. She is a member of the Tomkins-Zivian Duo, the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, and the Benvenue Fortepiano Trio with violinist Monica Huggett and pianist Eric Zivian.  Tanya has fun organizing a series of house concerts in Berkeley and Marin County, California – the Benvenue House Concert Series.

Tanya has collaborated on numerous critically acclaimed recordings, including the Debussy and Ravel String Quartets with the Euridice Quartet (members of the Concertgebouw Orchestra for Vanguard Classics), The Mendelssohn and Schumann Piano Trios on original instruments with the Benvenue Fortepiano Trio (Avie), the Beethoven Cello Sonatas with fortepianist, Eric Zivian (Bridge), and a recording of the complete Bach Suites on Baroque cello for Avie.
