Concert features music of the Russian Thaw April 7

Boris Berman, professor of piano at the Yale School of Music, will perform music from the “Russian Thaw” the evening of Sunday, April 7. The Thaw was a period of relative liberalization of Soviet cultural policies in the 1960s, and Berman, born in Soviet Russia, belonged to a small group of Moscow musicians that premiered pieces by young, nonconformist composers of the era.
Berman will discuss his work with figures such as Alfred Schnittke, Edison Denisov, Valentin Silvestrov, Tigran Mansurian, and Arvo Pärt, and will join with students from the Yale School of Music to perform selections from the composers’ music.
The program opens with two pieces by Edison Denisov: Ode for clarinet, percussion, and piano, and Three Pieces for cello and piano. Two pieces by Valentin Silvestrov will follow: the solo piano piece Elegy, and Postludium for cello and piano. The first half concludes with two pieces by Arvo Pärt, For Aleena for piano and Fratres for violin and piano.
The second half will open with Tigran Mansurian’s Testament for cello and piano. The program will conclude with two pieces by Alfred Schnittke: the Piano Sonata No. 2, and the Serenade for the unusual quintet of clarinet, violin, double bass, piano, and percussion.
Several YSM students will perform alongside Berman: clarinetist Gleb Kanasevich, violinist Shawn Moore, cellist James Kim, double bassist Gregory Vartian-Foss, and percussionists Garret Arney and Mari Yoshinaga.

About the performers
Boris Berman, piano, is well known to the audiences of close to fifty countries on six continents. He regularly appears with leading orchestras, on major recital series, and in important festivals. He studied at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with the distinguished pianist Lev Oborin. An active recording artist and a Grammy nominee, Mr. Berman was the first pianist to record the complete solo works by Prokofiev (Chandos). Other acclaimed releases include all piano sonatas by Alexander Scriabin (Music and Arts) and a recital of Shostakovich piano works (Ottavo), which received the Edison Classic Award in Holland, the Dutch equivalent of the Grammy. The recording of three Prokofiev concertos with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Neeme Jarvi conducting (Chandos), was named the Compact Disc of the Month by CD Review. Other recordings include works by Mozart, Beethoven, Franck, Weber, Debussy, Stravinsky, Schnittke, Shostakovich, Joplin, and Cage. In 1984, Mr. Berman joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music, where he is professor of piano, coordinator of the Piano department, and Music Director of the Horowitz Piano Series. He also gives master classes throughout the world, and in 2005 he was given the title of honorary professor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 2000, Yale University Press published Mr. Berman’s Notes from the Pianist’s Bench; since then, the book has been translated into several languages. In 2008, the same publisher released Mr. Berman’s new book Prokofiev’s Piano Sonatas: A Guide for the Listener and the Performer.
Belarus-born clarinetist Gleb Kanasevich is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree in clarinet at the Yale School of Music with David Shifrin. He has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, such as: Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Belarus National Philharmonic, Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Chamber Orchestra and more. He has appeared as a fellow, student artist with honors or visiting artist at Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, soundSCAPE Festival, Moritzburg Festival, Klangspuren Schwaz and more. A recipient of numerous awards and honors as a clarinetist and a composer, he currently serves as a clarinetist/composer with Lunar Ensemble (Baltimore-based ensemble interpreting contemporary music) and is under Chesapeake International Artists management.
A keen chamber musician, American violinist Shawn Moore has attended the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival three times. In 2011 he recorded two albums with the Kalmia String quartet featuring “Shakespeare’s Memory” and other works by Joseph Summer, a Boston based composer. The albums were released by Parma and Albany records in 2012. A graduate of the Bard College Conservatory, he also received a degree in Asian Studies, with a focus on China. He was a guest lecturer (in Mandarin) for the Bard Music Festival’s 2012 China tour. Shawn is a teaching fellow at Yale and also maintains a private studio. This past summer, he was invited to join the faculty of the inaugural edition of the International Music Festival of Colon, Venezuela, where he performed, taught and worked with students of El Sistema. In January 2013, Shawn performed in Costa Rica and worked with students from SiNEM, the Costa Rican music initiative modeled on El Sistema. Shawn Moore has studied with Cyrus Forough and Ida Kavafian, and is currently studying with Ani Kavafian at Yale University, where he is pursuing a Master’s degree.
Cellist James Kim is the winner of numerous prizes, including the 2012 Sony USA Foundation Career Grant, the First Prize at the 2009 Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, First Prize at the 2006 International David Popper Cello Competition in Várpalota, Hungary, and Second Prize at the 2009 Blount-Slawson Concerto Competition in Montgomery, Alabama. Born in Seoul, Korea in 1993, James Kim began his studies in 2002 with Susan Moses at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he also received tutelage from Janos Starker. At the age of 11 he won a local competition and performed the Haydn C Major Cello Concerto with orchestra. In 2007 he enrolled at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts and the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, where he studied with Laurence Lesser. He currently studies with Aldo Parisot at Yale University.
Gregory Vartian-Foss performs on the double bass, electric bass, and the viola da gamba. His career has taken him to Walt Disney Concert Hall, the 92nd Street Y, and Carnegie Hall for performances of orchestral and chamber music. He maintains avid interest in chamber music, contemporary repertoire, and performing with historically informed ensembles. Greg graduated from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music on a Dean’s scholarship and currently attends the Yale School of Music on a full scholarship where he studies with Don Palma. He has also studied with Bruce Bransby, Jeremy Kurtz, and others. He has attended the Indiana University summer music festival and the Domaine Forget Academy in Quebec.
Garrett Arney is a percussionist dedicated to performing and expanding the repertoire of percussion music. He was actively involved with the commission of Alejandro Vinao’s “Book of Grooves” for two marimbas, and gave the World Premiere with Sao Aoki in January of 2012. He has also performed new works by James Wood, John Luther Adams, and numerous young composers. In performance, Garrett is active both as a soloist, and as a chamber musician, playing with groups comprised of mixed instrumentation as well as with the energetic Sandbox Percussion Quartet. He has performed in a number of International Solo Competitions in Austria, Germany, and the United States, as well as the New England Chamber Music Competition. He has worked artists such as Amadinda Percussion Group, So Percussion Group, Mike Burritt, She-e Wu, Ji-Hye Jung, Svet Stoyanov, and Gwen Burgett. He is currently completeing a Graduate Degree from the Yale School of music, under the instruction of Robert van Sice.
A recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, percussionist Mari Yoshinaga has performed to acclaim both in her native Japan and in the United States, equally outstanding in solo, chamber music, and orchestral settings. She has worked with conductors such as Simon Rattle, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, and Alan Gilbert. Her recent collaborations include performances with Eighth Blackbird and a world premier/CD recording of Partita: Suite for Guitar and Percussion by Paul Lansky with guitarist David Starobin. Mari was born in Kagoshima, Japan. Immersed in music from an early age, she began studying piano at age three, marimba at age five, euphonium at ten, cello at eleven, and other percussion at twelve. She is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music where she is a member of the Yale Percussion Group directed by Robert van Sice.
