Music by Ted Hearne featured in DMA recital September 26th

The Yale School of Music presents the DMA recital of composer Ted Hearne on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 8 pm.

Hearne is perhaps best known for his Katrina Ballads, a modern-day oratorio with a primary source libretto which offers a searing portrayal of the media’s take of Hurricane Katrina. According to The Los Angeles Times, “No single artist embodies the post-genre Brooklyn scene, but Hearne may be its most zealous auteur.”

The recital will begin with Nobody’s, a rousing solo violin piece written in 2010, performed by Miki-Sophia Cloud. Listen to Ms. Cloud performing the piece here. Next will be Hearne’s 2011 composition Parlor Diplomacy, a five-movement work for solo piano which he wrote for Timo Andres, the pianist who will perform the piece. The second half of the concert will open with Hearne’s 2012 piece Crispy Gentlemen for mixed septet. The performers are flutist Domenica Fossati, bass clarinetist Christa van Alstine, violinist Miki-Sophia Cloud, violist Anne Lanzilotti, cellist Mariel Roberts, pianist Timo Andres, and percussionist Kevin Sims. This piece demonstrates a quirky approach to composition inspired by the works of experimental composer Morton Feldman. Hearne composed the propulsive, rhythmic piece—which includes slap tones, squeaks, junky gongs, and a single plucked piano string—from the middle outwards, aided by the use of a computer to copy, paste, invert, and reorder melodies ad infinitum. The performance will conclude a recording of Stem, one of Hearne’s newest compositions. The recording was made live in April 2013 at Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles. The piece’s constellation of musical movements examines the multi-faceted relationship between music, education, and violence in a contemporary urban landscape.

About Ted Hearne

Ted Hearne (b. 1982, Chicago) is a dynamic composer, conductor, and performer with polyglot sensibilities in new and traditional classical music. As comfortable in operatic and orchestral works as in rock and choral music, Hearne’s compositions are socially engaging, exploring the complexity of contemporary experience with visceral power and raw emotional beauty.

Ted’s music has been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, the Calder Quartet, The Knights, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, Transit Ensemble, and New York City Opera; and heard at the MATA Festival, Bang on a Can Marathon, Carlsbad Music Festival, New York City’s (le) Poisson Rouge and Brooklyn’s Issue Project Room. “Partition” was commissioned by the Yale Glee Club with the Yale Symphony Orchestra for its 150th Anniversary Gala at Carnegie Hall, and “Cutest Little Arbitrage” was commissioned for Ensemble Klang to premiere at Gaudeamus Musiekweek 2011 in Utrecht.

Ted is the artistic director of Yes is a World, resident conductor of Red Light New Music, and was for five years composer-in-residence of the Chicago Children’s Choir. Ted received a 2008 Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award in 2008 and 2012, and a commission from the Barlow Endowment in 2012. He was an artist in residence at the MacDowell Colony in Fall 2009 and Chicago’s High Concept Laboratories in 2012, and has recently completed collaborations with composer J.G. Thirlwell, jazz musician René Marie and renowned filmmaker Bill Morrison. He will collaborate in the near future with harpist Zeena Parkins, cellist Ashley Bathgate, and DJ/turntablist Philippe Petit.

Ted attended Manhattan School of Music before coming to Yale. He has studied with Martin Bresnick, Aaron Jay Kernis, Ezra Laderman, David Lang, Nils Vigeland, and Julia Wolfe.
