Michael Mizrahi ’08DMA receives Lawrence Award for Excellence in Creative Activity

 Pianist Michael Mizrahi ’08DMA, assistant professor of music at Lawrence University, received the Lawrence Award for Excellence in Creative Activity. Established in 2006, the award recognizes outstanding creative work for advancing Lawrence’s mission.

Mizrahi joined the conservatory of music faculty in 2009. His debut album, The Bright Motion on New Amsterdam Records, was released last spring. It was included on both Time Out New York’s and Time Out Chicago’s annual lists of best albums of 2012. MORE

Radio interview with Aaron Jay Kernis

Faculty composer Aaron Jay Kernis talks to David Alan Miller of the Albany Symphony Orchestra on WAMC Northeast Public Radio.

The Albany Symphony Orchestra will premiere Kernis’ piece Three Flavors for Piano & Orchestra on October 19th. In the interview, Kernis discusses diverse topics including teaching at Yale, his compositional process, and the genesis of Three Flavors.

Video: Inauguration Celebration Concert

In honor of University President Peter Salovey’s inauguration, a musical celebration of all that is Yale was held on Friday, October 11th in Woolsey Hall.

The event was hosted by Master of Ceremony Robert Blocker, Henry and Lucy Moses Dean of Music, and featured performances by the University’s major performing ensembles: Yale Concert Band, Yale Philharmonia, Yale Symphony Orchestra, Yale Camerata, and Yale Glee Club. Other performers included University Organist Thomas Murray; organist Paul Jacobs ’02MM, ’03AD; the Yale Cellos, directed by Aldo Parisot; and an ensemble of Yale guitarists, directed by Benjamin Verdery.

Faculty composer Christopher Theofanidis selected for Copland House Residency

theofanidisComposer Christopher Theofanidis ’97DMA was recently selected for a Copland House Residency during the 2013–14 season.

Copland House announced recently that eight gifted American composers from five states and Great Britain have been selected for the coveted all-expenses-paid residencies at Aaron Copland’s home. The house, a National Historic Landmark, is located in the lower Hudson Valley of New York. MORE
