A rustle of sheet music, whispering groan of bones readjusting, and then, suddenly, there it was: Wendy Sharp gave a furtive glance at the other musicians onstage, and as if the solution to a great, complex code, Morse Recital Hall was filled with Leó Weiner’s robust, Romantic tones.

Seamless, wordless communication had as much to do with the music as the notes did when Sharp, critically acclaimed violinist and Yale professor, performed works on a broad Hungarian theme by Leó Weiner, Béla Bartók and Johannes Brahms Sunday evening with violist Marka Gustavvson, cellist Mimi Hwang and pianist Melvin Chen, a performance intimate enough to banish the plummeting temperatures outside. Yale alumni victorious at Grammys


Roomful of Teeth 

On January 26, 2014, several Yale School of Music alumni won Grammy awards. Thomas Newman ’77BA, ’78MM won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for the James Bond film Skyfall, and Brad Wells ’05DMA and his ensemble Roomful of Teeth won Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for their self-titled debut album.

Roomful of Teeth is a vocal ensemble founded and directed by Wells, whose members include alumni Estelí Gomez ’08BA, Caroline Shaw ’07MM, Eric Dudley ’03MM, ’04MMA, ’11DMA, Dashon Burton ’11MM, and Virginia Warnken ’13MM. The group performed at the pre-telecast ceremony; the video is online here, with the ensemble’s performance at about 1:09. MORE

Event Discusses Financial Life After Yale

Astrid BaumgardnerOn Tuesday, January 28 at 5:30, YSM students will learn about financial life after Yale. Financial expert Steve Blum ’74, Senior Director for Alumni at Yale, and Astrid Baumgardner, Coordinator Career Strategies at the Yale School of Music, will lead the discussion.

Many students are worried about how to earn revenue through a musical career. Students will learn about managing their financial life after leaving YSM, including budgeting and expenses, saving and investing, and taxes.
