Brian Fennelly ’65 MM, ’68 PhD receives award, releases CD

fennelly-brian-webBrian Fennelly ’65 MM, ’68 PhD received the 2013 Union College Outstanding Engineering Alumnus Award for my career as a composer. Fennelly earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Union College in 1958 before coming to Yale to study composition and theory.

In addition, his fifth solo CD, The Other Side of Time, was released on the Albany Records label. It contains orchestral and chamber music commissioned by the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble, duo parnas (violin/cello), Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, and trumpeter Chris Gekker. MORE

Matthew Barnson ’12 DMA releases ‘Sibyl Tones’ on Tzadik Records

barnson-sibyl-tonesUtah-born and New York City-based composer Matthew Barnson ’07 MM, ’08 MMA, ’12 DMA has released his latest CD, Sibyl Tones, on Tzadik Records.

The CD presents three original pieces for string quartet performed by the Arditti Quartet from London and the JACK quartet from New York City. Tzadik praises Barnson as a  “thrilling new American compositional voice.”

Barnson has studied at the Eastman School of Music, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Yale School of Music. At 34, the composer is the youngest recipient of a Barlow Commission from the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications, and was a 2009 recipient of the Charles Ives Prize.

Louis Lohraseb ’15MM accepted to institute with Lorin Maazel

LohrasebLouis Lohraseb ’15 MM, a student in orchestral conducting, was invited to participate in the 2014 Castleton Festival’s Maestro Maazel Masterclasses. He will study with Maestro Lorin Maazel, the Music Director of the Munich Philharmonic and the Executive and Artistic Director of the Castleton Festival. From May 29th to 31st, Lohraseb will work with the conductors alone before and the singers and orchestra members arrive.

The conducting master classes from June 9th to July 20th will include sessions on “How to Conduct an Opera,” “How to Conduct a 20th Century Masterpiece,” and “The Art of Interpretation,” among others. The Castleton festival, in the Piedmont hills of Virginia, nurtures young artists in opera and classical music performance. MORE
