Guitar Chamber Music returns December 9

Students from Benjamin Verdery’s studio and colleagues will present their biannual performance of guitar chamber music, with a variety of works for ensembles that include the guitar. The recital takes place Tuesday, December 9 at 7:30 pm in Morse Recital Hall.

The concert opens with selections of Bartók’s  Romanian Folk Dances, performed by guitarist Hernan Leon and violinist Ruda Lee (Violin). Next, bassoonist Bogdan Dumitriu and guitarist Ian Tuski will play transcriptions of selections from Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe, Op. 48, as well as Rag-Time, a piece by YSM student composer Liliya Ugay.

Arash Noori, guitar, will join with mezzo-soprano Kelly Hill to perform Tell me where is Fancy Bred by the late American composer Elliott Carter.  The concert then migrates to India, with Joanna Wu, flute, and An Tran, guitar, performing Ravi Shankar’s L’aube Enchantée.

After intermission, the concert resumes with Paganini’s Sonata Concertata, performed by violinist Yite Xu and guitarist Lilit Mardiyan. Hernan Leon returns with bassist Andrea Beyer to play Jiri Laburda’s Duo for Guitar and Contrabass, written in 1931.

Ye Hyung Chung, violin, and Solomon Silber, guitar, will play Rene Eespere’s Matbeth. The concert concludes with the guitar duo of Ray Zhou and John Kossler playing Steve Reich’s Nagoya Guitars and the Scherzo from Mendelssohn’s Op. 16, No. 2, arranged by Kossler.

Admission to the concert is free.
