Yale Philharmonia plays Russian music and more May 1

philharmonia_woolsey3The Yale School of Music presents the Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale in a concert of Russian legends on Friday, May 1 at 7:30 pm. Shinik Hahm  will lead the orchestra in music by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Strauss.

A feature of the program is Stravinsky’s ravishing ballet Firebird, in its lesser-heard full version from 1910. The ballet is based on Russian folk tales of the magical glowing bird that can be both a blessing and a curse to its owner.

Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy, based on the Shakespeare play, depicts several scenes: Friar Laurence, the Montagues and Capulets fighting in the streets, the popular and recognizable balcony scene, and finally the death of the two lovers. MORE
