Recordings by YSM alumni make Rhapsody's Top Ten Classical Albums for March

Rhapsody's list of Top Ten Classical Albums for March, 2015 includes two by YSM alumni: Mélanie Clapiès's Pierrots Lunaires at No. 4 and James Austin Smith's Distance at No. 5. Mélanie Clapiès '15 AD, a violinist, recorded Les Pierrots Lunaires with cellist Yan Levionnois on the Fondamenta label. The recording, which includes works by Ligeti, Ravel, Villa-Lobos, Xenakis, Mařatka, and Schulhoff, is distributed in the U.S. by Naxos. Clapiès was recently named one of the winners of the 2015 Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition.

Oboist James Austin Smith '08 MM released Distance in January 2015 on the TwoPianists label. Along with harpist Bridget Kibbey and pianist Luis Magalhães, Smith plays the Hindemith Oboe Sonata; Elliott Carter’s Trilogy for Oboe and Harp; and pieces by Peteris Vasks, Robert Schumann, and Ernst Krenek. The album also includes a transcription of J.S. Bach’s Sonata for Flute and Harpsichord in E-flat major, BWV 1031.
