YSM launches new mobile app along with new centerpiece video

The Yale School of Music (YSM) is proud to announce the launch of a new digital app and the release of a new cinematic admissions video.

The app, designed by Monica Ong Reed of YSM and developed in collaboration with Jason England, Michael Ferguson, and Andrea Porto from Yale Printing and Publishing Services (YPPS), is the School of Music's first foray into native digital publishing. With the app, the School of Music can create publications that audiences not only read but also hear and watch in an immersive environment.

Embedded in the app is YSM's new centerpiece video, produced by Austin Kase. Titled "The Music Makers," the video features a number of YSM faculty, students, and alumni working in different cross-sections of the music profession across the country. The video is available today in the app only. It will be available for viewing on the Yale School of Music's website and social media channels starting Friday, Oct. 23.

The app's inaugural content focuses on admissions, bringing the School's new viewbook into the digital space. In addition to providing information on topics such as degree programs, faculty, resources, and leadership development, the app also offers video spotlights on young alumni with a variety of successful careers, from pianist Sean Chen, the winner of an Annenberg Arts Fellowship and a Cliburn Competition medalist, to cellist Ashley Bathgate, a new music specialist who plays with ensembles such as TwoSense and the Bang on a Can All-Stars.

The School's live stream is built into the app so that audiences anywhere in the world can watch YSM concerts in real time. While the live streams are also accessible from the School's website, the app offers a more focused viewing experience.

Future content will showcase more facets of the Yale School of Music through stories about its vibrant community, behind-the-scenes views of YSM, and tools that enhance the concertgoer's experience. The app is free to download, and future content will also remain free of charge.

Robert Blocker, the dean of YSM, noted: “The Yale School of Music, as a graduate institution within an international research university, has a unique place among music schools. Through our new app, we can instantly share and showcase both our distinguished musicians and our university's incomparable creative resources. This dynamic tool will invite viewers from around the world to engage with YSM in the digital space.”

The Yale School of Music's communications team has won numerous awards for its work in the digital space. The School's website was a finalist for a Webby Award, was a Silver Winner in the W3 Awards, and won a Silver Award from the Connecticut Art Directors Club. Its previous centerpiece video won Telly Awards in two categories as well as two Internet Advertising Competition Awards.

The app is available for free download for both Apple and Android devices, and is optimized for tablets. Visit the app store on your device and search for "Yale Music."
