My passion, for the duration of my career as a teacher and coach of vocal music, has been to instill in my students the love for a range of musical eras and styles. The intensive focus of my teaching is on diction, phrasing, text and subtext, as diligently applied to all vocal challenges. At Yale, my students excel at correcting and improving their Cyrillic pronunciation through the foundational knowledge, emotions and meaning of the works in their repertoire.

Pianist Emily Olin began her career in Russia, where she worked at the Russian Academy of Arts for two decades teaching style, diction, text, musical interpretation, and vocal repertoire. Many of her students have gone on to perform in premiere opera houses and festivals and win competitions around the world. Olin has published numerous articles on style and interpretation, toured and recorded as a piano accompanist, and received prestigious honorary titles and awards.
After coming to the United States in 1992, Olin continued her work as a lecturer, vocal coach, pianist, and accompanist. At the Yale School of Music, she teaches Russian diction and repertoire. She also maintains a private studio in New York where she coaches professional singers and helps them develop their classical repertoire. In addition to teaching, Olin continues to perform and serves on the jury of the Zara Dolukhanova International Art Songs Competition “Amber Nightingale” in Russia.
In October 2012, Olin’s book Singing in Russian: A Guide to Language and Performance was published by Scarecrow Press.
