The chamber music program at Yale School of Music is unique in that all performance faculty coach chamber music, and all students are involved in chamber music for their entire time in school. Chamber assignments are organized by the chamber music department, and ensembles receive weekly coachings by performance faculty members. Chamber music offers students the opportunity to work intensively on the chamber music literature with a small group and a faculty coach, and the opportunity to perform in various public concerts and series.
Chamber Music Schedule
Chamber groups are organized through the Department of Chamber Music. Ensembles are selected each semester and receive weekly coachings.
Chamber music meets as a scheduled course on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. This dedicated time makes scheduling much easier for students and coaches, as chamber groups are guaranteed set rooms, times, and coachings each week. It is expected that one of the class meetings will be used for rehearsal and one for coaching, and groups are strongly encouraged to schedule additional weekly rehearsal times in addition to the class meeting times.
Performance opportunities for chamber music are plentiful. The Lunchtime Chamber Music series presents five concerts each semester, held at one of the following locations: Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, the Yale Center for British Art, and the Slifka Center. Interested groups submit program information to the chamber music department and are selected by recommendation of faculty coaches.
The Vista concert series is a forum for groups to perform a complete work and present the piece to the audience with brief spoken program notes. The intent is to make chamber music more accessible to our audience, train groups to effectively communicate with audiences, and provide more performance opportunities for groups in the program. Coaching for the spoken part of the concert is provided by associate dean Michael Yaffe and others. Groups are selected for the series by the recommendation of faculty coaches.
Chamber Music Competition
Each spring semester, the Oneppo Chamber Music Series presents student groups in the annual Competition Winners’ Concert. Auditions for the concert take place in the spring.
