The violin program offers an individual approach to each student. Violin faculty encourage their student to become their own best teachers through critical self-awareness.
There are three violin studios, each with approximately twelve students. YSM offers a collaborative, not competitive, environment in which violin students support each other. Students are encouraged to play repertoire for other teachers to broaden their perspectives.
Weekly studio seminars focus on a range of topics, from technical issues such as vibrato or bowing, to discussions of how to lead in a string quartet, to strategies for managing practice time in a demanding schedule.
Chamber music is an integral part of the Yale School of Music experience. Students also play in various ensembles in the New Music New Haven concert series. The Yale Philharmonia offers important orchestral experience, with a wide variety of repertoire and frequent opportunities to work with guest conductors.
