Ellington Series presents Piano Jazz Summit March 4

piano-jazz-hThe Ellington Jazz Series at the Yale School of Music presents the Piano Jazz Summit,  Friday, March 4 at 7:30 pm. The concert features three of the jazz world’s great pianists: Barry Harris, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Aaron Diehl

The program will feature the pianists playing alone, and together as a trio, as well as speaking about their lives as performers and their relationship to jazz. The audience can also look forward to a special live video projection of the keyboard, offering the a bird’s-eye view of the pianists’ hands. Willie Ruff, artistic director of the Ellington Jazz Series, calls this concert “a rare opportunity to hear three master pianists.”

The concert takes place at Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Hall (470 College Street, New Haven). Tickets start at $20, $10 with student ID. Purchase online, call 203 432-4158, or visit the box office at 470 College Street.

The Ellington Jazz Series wraps up its 2014–2015 season on Friday, March 6. Will Ruff will host a program called The Tuskegee Airmen, Yardbird, and the Blues: The American Jazz Century.

The program will feature pianist Aaron Diehl and his trio. Diehl, the recipient of the 2013 Jazz Journalist Association’s Up-And-Coming Musician of the Year Award, plays with Paul Sikivie, bass, and Lawrence Leathers, drums. The New York Daily News has said: “Aaron Diehl, a rising star of jazz piano, has an individual talent so huge that one day he may extend the jazz tradition.” MORE

Ellington Jazz Series announces new concert season

The Ellington Jazz Series at Yale, directed by Willie Ruff, announces its upcoming concert season today. The 2014–2015 season will have four concerts, beginning Friday, September 12 with the Ravi Coltrane Quartet.

Two ensembles that performed at Yale in 2012 will return this season: the Ron Carter Trio on October 24, and the Mingus Big Band, a tribute to the late Charles Mingus, on December 5.

The season closes on March 6 with The American Jazz Century, a multimedia program hosted by Willie Ruff and featuring pianist Aaron Diehl.

Concerts take place Fridays at 7:30 pm in Morse Recital Hall (located in Sprague Hall at 470 College Street).
