Yale Opera musicians win at Gerda Lissner Competition

One of the most prestigious vocal competitions, the Gerda Lissner Competition, has recently announced its 2016 Prize Winners, including three singers from the Yale Opera program.

Tenor Galeano Salas ’13 MM was awarded a Top Prize of $15,000, mezzo-soprano Aleksandra Romano ’14 MM won a 1st Prize of $10,000, and current student and bass-baritone Pawel Konik won a 3rd Prize of $3,000. The singers who are awarded prizes will be featured in the Winner’s Concert on May 1, 2016 at 3PM, at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Recital Hall in New York City.

Brian Vu and Aleksandra Romano receive awards from Sullivan Foundation

Two Yale Opera alumni have received awards from the William Matheus Sullivan Foundation.

Baritone Brian Vu ’14 MM, ’15 AD was a recipient of the Sullivan Grant, a $12,000 award to young artists who auditioned for the Foundation in New York on November 8 and 9, 2015.

In addition to the cash award, he will participate in a five-year program of continued financial aid for coaching in new roles, which is one of the unique features of the Sullivan awards.

Mezzo-soprano Aleksandra Romano ’14 MM was one of seven winners selected to receive the $5,000 Career Development Grants to seven singers. MORE

Yongyan Hu leads the Yale Philharmonia in Debussy, Ravel, and more Jan. 23

The Yale School of Music presents the Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale with guest conductor Yongyan Hu in concert Friday, January 23, 2014 at 7:30 pm. The program features music by the French impressionist composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel as well as a piece by Catalán composer Xavier Montsalvatge.

Mr. Hu begins the program with Ravel’s raucous La Valse. Originally intended for the ballet, Ravel provides a charming waltz tune. Ravel masterfully unwinds the fabric of the traditional Viennese style, transforming the waltz form into a doomed, pulsing, left-footed machine. MORE
