Cellist Alvin Wong plays Beethoven, Chen Yi, and more in DMA recital Nov. 13

wong_alvin_2013Cellist Yan Ming Alvin Wong will give his DMA recital on Thursday, November 13 at 7:30 pm. The recital, which includes music by composers as diverse as Beethoven, Prokofiev, Augusta Read Thomas, and Zhou Long, will also feature pianist Lindsay Garritson.

The program opens with Beethoven’s Seven Variations on “Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen,” WoO 46, and continues with Prokofiev’s Sonata in C Major, Op. 119. Composer Augusta Read Thomas is a graduate of Yale, and Wong will play her Spring Song, written in 1995. MORE

Alumnus Alvin Wong joins faculty of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music

wong_alvin_2013Cellist Alvin Wong ’09AD, ’11MMA has been appointed Lecturer of Music (Cello) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Mr. Wong will commence his post in January of 2014.

A native of Hong Kong, Alvin started playing the piano at the age of three but did not study the cello until he was 14. After winning some local competitions, he continued his cello studies at the Eastman School of Music while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. He received his master’s degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he was also an Associate Instructor in Music Theory. MORE
