Yale Opera presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream in February 2016

The Yale School of Music presents Yale Opera‘s new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream this coming February 19–21. One of the most frequently performed operas today, Benjamin Britten’s atmospheric opera is adapted from Shakespeare’s revered play of the same title.

The production will be directed by Claudia Solti, making her Yale Opera debut. Known for her work in theatre and film as well as opera, Solti previously directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2011 with conductor Valery Gergiev.

Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann will also make his Yale Opera debut. Currently music director of the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra and the Fjord Cadenza Festival, Bergmann is considered “one of the most talented Scandinavian conductors” working today. MORE

YSM musicians perform “Strictly Britten” April 9 at Yale Center for British Art

Musicians from the Yale School of Music will perform “Strictly Britten” on Wednesday, April 9 at the Yale Center for British Art. Pianist Wei-Yi Yang and violist Ettore Causa, both members of the School of Music faculty, will perform with oboist Andrew Parker ’10 MM.

The concert features solo and duo works written by British composer Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) between 1936 and 1963. MORE

Guest conductor James Conlon leads the Yale Philharmonia Oct. 18

The Yale School of Music presents the distinguished conductor James Conlon  leading the Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale on Friday, October 18, 2013. Conlon, a specialist in the music of Benjamin Britten, will conduct Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem and Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. The concert takes place at 8 pm in Woolsey Hall (500 College Street, New Haven).

2013 marks the centenary of Benjamin Britten, and Conlon is engaged in a three-year project to mark the anniversary. Britten wrote the Sinfonia da Requiem in 1940, when he was 26 years old, as a protest against the Second World War. The piece’s use of the Latin titles from the Catholic Requiem, its somber mood, and its subtle militaristic allusions all contribute to the pacifist composer’s message. MORE

Get your ticket online or from a chorale member for zero —  yes, zero — dollars.

“Yes, you can actually ‘purchase’ a ticket for zero dollars,” says Artistic Director Jeffrey Bernstein. “Then, after the performance, we will ask audience members to pay what they feel the concert was worth. All of us at PMC are very excited about the idea of giving music to people first and, only then, afterwards asking for payment.” MORE

Casting announced for The Rape of Lucretia

Yale Opera is pleased to announce the casting for its upcoming performances of Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28, 2012 at 8 pm in Morse Recital Hall. The production features the work of stage director Vera Calabria and musical director Douglas Dickson. MORE

Learn about the Britten Thematic Catalog Project April 2

On Monday, April 2, Jonathan Manton will discuss the Benjamin Britten Thematic Catalog Project. The forum, which is presented by SCOPA (Yale University Library’s Standing Committee on Professional Awareness), takes place at 2:00 pm in the International Room at Sterling Memorial Library.

Created under the auspices of the Britten-Pears Foundation, the Benjamin Britten Thematic Catalog Project seeks to create a musicological database detailing all of the composer Benjamin Britten’s works online. Manton serves as the project’s Technical Support Officer.

Manton’s work for the project has notably included the documentation and analysis of approximately 1,150 original manuscript sources, which constitute the 735 works Britten wrote between the ages of 5 and 18, most of which have never received any form of scholarly assessment. The principle objective of Manton’s current work is the technical realization of the resource, overseeing the continued development of the catalog’s infrastructure and custom database solutions, and preparation of much of its digital content.

This presentation will provide an overview of the Britten Thematic Catalog, highlighting the project’s research and technical achievements to date. It will also discuss the various usability updates that have recently been incorporated into the resource following a 2010 survey of potential users. Finally, the forum will outline the work that remains to be done leading up to publication, and the project’s aspirations for future versions of the tool after 2013.

Updated program announced for Vocal Britain concerts

The Yale School of Music is pleased to announce the updated program and performers for Vocal Britain, the first concert of this year’s Yale in New York Series.

Janna Baty, mezzo-soprano

The program of music by Benjamin Britten and William Walton will take place on Sunday, December 4, at 7:30 pm, in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. New Haven audiences will get a preview of that program on Thursday, December 1, at 8 pm in Morse Recital Hall.

World-renowned hornist and Yale faculty member William Purvis will perform Britten’s haunting “Serenade” with tenor Dann Coakwell ’11AD and a string orchestra of current Yale students.

The program will open with esteemed mezzo-soprano Janna Baty, a faculty member and a graduate of the School of Music, and pianist Jill Brunelle performing William Walton’s delightful, rarely-heard song cycle “A Song for the Lord Mayor’s Table.”

John McDonough, narrator

The second half will feature Walton’s tour-de-force, “Façade: An Entertainment,” with Baty and actor

John McDonough reciting Edith Sitwell’s inimitable poetry. William Boughton, the music director of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and an expert in the music of William Walton, will conduct a chamber ensemble of Yale School of Music instrumentalists.

The charismatic McDonough, an actor and narrator, has performed with numerous orchestras and chamber music festivals, including narrating Stravinsky’s “L’Histoire du Soldat” at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival this past summer. He has recorded hundreds of audiobooks, winning an Audie Award in 2006, and starred in the revival of Captain Kangaroo. MORE

Yale Opera announces two new productions for 2012

The Yale Opera program at the Yale School of Music has announced two new productions for the spring semester of 2012. February will feature Mozart’s comedy Così fan tutte at New Haven’s historic Shubert Theater. In April, Yale Opera will perform Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia in Morse Recital Hall.

Speranza Scappucci will conduct Così fan tutte, becoming the first woman to conduct a Yale Opera production. Maestra Scappucci is on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera as an assistant conductor and is active internationally as a vocal coach and continuo harpsichordist.

The young Australian director Justin Way, praised for his “creative energy” and “clever and sympathetic” work, will provide stage direction. The production will feature the Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale, the School of Music’s premier ensemble.

Così fan tutte will be sung in Italian with projected English translations. Performances take place February 10–12 at the Shubert Theater (247 College Street). The Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm; the Sunday performance is at 2 pm. Tickets are available at the Shubert Theater box office, online at www.shubert.com, or by phone at 203 562-5666.

Yale Opera’s new production of Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia will feature stage direction by Vera Calabria, who has worked with some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses and now also works frequently with young singers as director and dramatic coach. Douglas Dickson and Timothy Shaindlin will provide musical direction.

The Rape of Lucretia will be performed Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28. Both performances take place at 8 pm in Morse Recital Hall, located in Sprague Hall at 470 College Street (corner of Wall Street), New Haven. Joel Brennan gives a recital of 20th- and 21st-century trumpet music by Britten, Andriessen, and more

Brennan received a Fulbright to perform Dutch and American contemporary music

The Yale School of Music presents a Doctor of Musical Arts recital by Joel Brennan, trumpet on Thursday, February 17 at 8 pm in Morse Recital Hall (located in Sprague Hall, 470 College Street, New Haven). The program will feature music from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, beginning with Benjamin Britten’s Fanfare for Saint Edmundsbury, a piece for three trumpets written in 1959, followed by Vincent Persichetti’s Parable XVI (1975) for solo trumpet. Huang Ruo’s Wind Blows… (2007), which is flexible in its instrumentation, will be performed with percussionist Michael Compitello. The first half will close with Eric Nathan’s Cantus (2008) for trumpet and electronics.

As the recipient of a Fulbright grant in 2007, Brennan lived in the Netherlands and focused on promoting and performing contemporary music by Dutch and American composers. In this recital, he will perform the very short Very Sharp Trumpet Sonata by Louis Andriessen, the foremost Dutch composer working today. The concert will conclude with the U.S. premiere of a piece that Brennan commissioned, Sketches (2007) for trumpet and percussion by the young American composer Derek Jacoby. MORE
