Charles Richard-Hamelin wins silver in Chopin Competition

charles-richard-hamelinCanadian pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin won silver at the prestigious 17th International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. He also won the prize for the best performance of a sonata.

First place went to Seong-Jin Cho of South Korea; American Kate Liu took third.

This year’s competition featured over 75 young pianists from 20 different countries. During the three weeks of the competition, the pianists played only Chopin’s works before a 17-member international jury.

In its 88-year history, the Chopin competition has gained a reputation as one of the world’s top piano events, opening international careers to young pianists. MORE

Charles Richard-Hamelin ’13 MM wins second prize in Montreal Competition

CharlesRichardHamelinCharles Richard-Hamelin was recently awarded the second prize at the Montreal International Piano Competition. He also received the prize for the Best Canadian Artist, supported by the Bourbeau Foundation.

Laureates will perform with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, conducted by Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero. The Montreal International Musical Competition (MIMC) selected its top three prizewinners after ten days of high-level competition. MORE

Charles Richard-Hamelin ’13 MM wins third prize in Seoul International Music Competition

CharlesRichardHamelinOn March 30, 2014, alumnus Charles Richard-Hamelin ’13MM was awarded the third prize in the 10th Seoul International Music Competition. He also received the special prize for the Best Performance of a Beethoven Sonata.

In the final round, Richard-Hamelin played Rachmaninov’s Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 with the Korean Symphony Orchestra and conductor Yun-Sung Chang. The competition is held annually for piano, violin, and voice, in rotation. MORE

Two years after his victories in the Europe Awards and the National Piano Competition of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, this week Charles Richard-Hamelin has his first recital at the Festival de Lanaudière in an ambitious program. The recital is a return home after two years of study in the United States.
