Yale Baroque Ensemble performs “musique de chambre” Dec. 8

YBE_2013-14The Yale School of Music will present the Yale Baroque Ensemble on Sunday, December 8, 2013. Directed by faculty member Robert Mealy, the ensemble will perform a concert of elaborate and virtuosic music of the French Baroque. The performance begins at 3 pm in Morse Recital Hall, located in Sprague Hall at 470 College Street, New Haven.

The program features Couperin’s great last large-scale chamber work, “L’Imperiale” from Les Nations. Also on the program are brilliant sonatas by Leclair, Barrières, and others.  MORE

To the untrained eye, the instruments look more or less the same: long neck, shapely body, strings and a bow. But when Nayeon Kim and Jurrian van der Zanden take the stage Tuesday evening, they will feel centuries’ worth of difference.

At their performance of Bach pieces at Yale Collection of Musical Instruments (15 Hillhouse Ave. beginning at 5:30 p.m.), Kim and van der Zanden (pictured) will be playing a violin and a cello that were modeled after original Baroque-era instruments. Members of the Yale Baroque Ensemble, a yearlong postgraduate program of intensive Baroque music study, they are expected to master not only the music, but also the hardware. MORE

Yale Baroque Ensemble performs Bach Oct. 8

The Yale School of Music will present members of the Yale Baroque Ensemble in their first concert of the year on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. The program will focus on chamber music of J.S. Bach.

The Yale Baroque Ensemble (YBE) is a postgraduate ensemble whose members undertake a year of intensive study. The new members featured in this performance are Nayeon Kim, baroque violin, and Jurrian van der Zanden, baroque cello. They will be joined by harpsichordist David Fung. MORE

Yale Cellos perform 30th anniversary concert Apr. 10

The Yale School of Music celebrates the 30th anniversary of Yale Cellos in a concert on Wednesday, April 10. Founding director Aldo Parisot will lead the Grammy-nominated ensemble in music from the baroque to the present day, including pieces by Vivaldi, Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Veracini, and others.

Four virtuoso soloists will open the program, beginning with special guest Patrick Jee, a YSM graduate who is now a member of the New York Philharmonic. Jee will perform the Fantasy by faculty composer Ezra Laderman, a piece that he has recorded for Albany Records. The other soloists are Jennifer Jinhee Park, Jurrian van der Zanden, and finally James Jeonghwan Kim, whose New York debut recital this February the New York Concert Review hailed as “absolute perfection.” MORE
