Wendy Sharp offers chamber music recital Jan 31

sharp_wendy_web_hThe Faculty Artist Series at the Yale School of Music presents violinist Wendy Sharp and friends in a chamber music recital on SundayJanuary 31 at 4:00 pm. Sharp will be joined by fellow YSM faculty member Melvin Chen, piano, as well as by Julie Kim, violin, Marka Gustavsson, viola, and Mimi Hwang, cello.

The program opens with the first of Haydn‘s many string quartets: the Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 1, No. 1. This is followed by Ernö Dohnányi‘s Serenade in C major for string trio, Op. 10, which the composer based on Beethoven’s Op. 8 Serenade for string trio.

Closing the program, all five players will come together for Elgar‘s Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84.  MORE

Violinist Wendy Sharp and friends perform chamber music Jan. 25

sharpThe Faculty Artist Series at the Yale School of Music presents award-winning violinist Wendy Sharp and friends in a chamber music concert on Sunday, January 25 at 4:00 pm.

Ms. Sharp will be joined by fellow Yale faculty member Melvin Chen, piano, as well as Marka Gustavsson, viola, and Mimi Hwang, cello.

The concert opens with Beethoven’s Serenade, Op. 8, for violin, viola, and cello. This will be followed by three movements from George Tsontakis’ Knicknacks, a duet for violin and cello. MORE

Wendy Sharp and friends play chamber music by Brahms, Bartók, and more Jan. 26

sharpThe Yale School of Music presents the violinist Wendy Sharp and friends in a Faculty Artist Series concert on Sunday, January 26. Sharp will perform with fellow faculty member Melvin Chen, piano, and with guest artists Marka Gustavsson, viola, and Mimi Hwang, cello. The program includes music by Brahms, Bartók, and more.

The performance will begin with works by two Hungarian composers, Leó Weiner and Béla Bartók. Sharp, Gustavsson, and Hwang will open the  concert with Weiner’s String Trio in G minor, Op. 6. Weiner, a leading Hungarian music educator of the early twentieth century, was influenced by early Romantic composers from Beethoven to Mendelssohn. Like his contemporary Bartók, Weiner incorporated elements of folk music into his compositions. MORE

Violinist Wendy Sharp & friends perform chamber music of France

January 29 concert features music of Fauré, Ravel, and Milhaud

The Yale School of Music’s Faculty Artist Series presents violinist Wendy Sharp (pictured at left) in a concert of French chamber music on Sunday, January 29th at 4 pm. Sharp will be joined by violist Marka Gustavsson, cellist Mimi Hwang, and pianist Melvin Chen. The concert takes place in Morse Recital Hall, located in Sprague Hall at 470 College Street.

Wendy Sharp is a member of the Yale School of Music faculty and the winner of numerous competitions. Collectively, Gustavsson, Hwang, and Chen are on the faculty at institutions such as the Bard College Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, and Yellow Barn, and are members of ensembles including the Colorado Quartet and the Amenda Quartet.

The program will include two duets: Milhaud‘s Sonatine for violin and viola, and Ravel’s Sonata for violin and cello, a tribute to the memory of Debussy with subtle nods to Bartók and Kodaly. The concert will conclude with Fauré’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 15, which is full of “refined sensuality, elegance, and craftsmanship” (Classical Music Guide). MORE
