Suzana Bartal releases first CD

Suzana Bartal ’13 MM, ’14 MMA released her first CD, Suzana Bartal plays Schumann, on March 4, 2016. The album, which has already received favorable reviews in French music publications, was recorded in Morse Recital Hall by Gene Kimball, senior recording engineer at YSM. The album was released on the French label Paraty and features Schumann’s beloved Kreisleriana, Op. 16, alongside Waldszenen, Op. 82, and Geistervariationen WoO 24.  MORE

The presents a recital by cellist Jacques Lee Wood on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 7:30 pm. Mr. Wood’s recital is the culmination of his studies toward the Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree. Esther Park will accompany on piano. LIVESTREAM

The program will begin with Beethoven‘s Seven Variations on “Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen” from Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Next will be a 2010 composition by contemporary American composer  Jacob Cooper ’14DMA entitled Arches. Cooper has been lauded by The New Yorker as “a maverick electronic song composer.” The first half of the concert will end with Bach‘s Sonata in G major, BWV 1027. MORE

Pianists Berman, Frankl, Yang unite in Feb. 19 concert

yang-frankl-bermanThe Horowitz Piano Series at the Yale School of Music presents a recital by pianists Boris BermanPeter Frankl, and Wei-Yi Yang on Wednesday, February 19. All three pianists are members of the School of Music faculty and internationally renowned performers.

The program opens with Schumann‘s Geistervariationen (Ghost Variations), performed by Wei-Yi Yang. The variations (on a theme that was Schumann’s own) was the composer’s last piano work.

The highlights of the program are the major piano duets of the Romantic composer Johannes Brahms, including the Variations on a Theme by Schumann, Op. 23, played by Frankl and Berman. Written for piano four-hands, the piece takes the theme from the Schumann work that opened the program.

Ettore Causa and Boris Berman perform Feb. 19th

Duos for piano and viola by Schumann, Brahms, Hindemith, and more

The Yale School of Music’s Faculty Artist Series presents violist Ettore Causa and pianist Boris Berman in a concert on Tuesday, February 19 at 8 pm. The duo will perform music by Schumann, Brahms, Hindemith, and Franck.

The concert will open with two movements from the F-A-E Sonata, the result of a collaboration among Schumann, Brahms, and Albert Dietrich to construct a violin sonata around the notes F, A, and E. The three letters were the result of the motto “Frei aber einsam” (“Free but lonely”), and each composer wrote one movement. Schumann’s expressive Intermezzo is the second movement, and Brahms’s Scherzo, full of rich harmonies and rhythmic vitality, is the third.

Following is the hauntingly beautiful “Meditation” by Paul Hindemith, a member of the Yale School of Music faculty for many years. This year marks fifty years since the composer’s death. Schumann’s Märchenbilder (“Fairy Tale Pictures”), Op. 113, depicts scenes from Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, and The Sleeping Beauty. The evening will conclude with Franck’s Sonata in A major.

Jasper String Quartet returns to Yale for Dec. 11 concert with pianist Wei-Yi Yang

Program features music by Mendelssohn, Ligeti, and Schumann

The Oneppo Chamber Music Series at the Yale School of Music presents the Jasper String Quartet on Tuesday, December 11 at 8 pm in Morse Recital Hall. The program will feature string quartets by Mendelssohn and Ligeti, as well as Schumann’s majestic piano quintet with faculty pianist Wei-Yi Yang.

The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F minor, Op. 80. One of composer’s last major works, this piece was written in the shadow of the death of his sister, Fanny.

In Ligeti’s String Quartet No. 1, subtitled “Metamorphoses nocturnes,” variations of the opening motif progress throughout the piece while exploring different textures and tone colors.

After intermission, pianist Wei-Yi Yang will join the ensemble for Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44. The piece, which showcases both conversational passages among the five instruments as well as passages setting the piano against the strings, helped establish the piano quintet as a serious genre.

The Jasper String Quartet was the Fellowship Quartet-in-Residence at the Yale School of Music 2008–2010, studying with the Tokyo String Quartet. The members of the quartet are J Frevogel and Sae Chonabayashi, violins; Sam Quintal, viola; and Rachel Henderson Freivogel, cello. MORE

Clarinetist Charles Neidich, pianist Robert Levin perform Schumann and Brahms Dec. 2 & 3

The Yale Collection of Musical Instruments presents the eminent duo of clarinetist Charles Neidich ’75BA and pianist Robert Levin on December 2 and 3. Using historical instruments, the performances will feature music of Brahms and Schumann as the composers themselves might have heard them.

Levin will be performing on a piano built by Johann Baptist Streicher in 1869. The instrument is identical to the one Brahms used to compose his works the last twenty-four years of his life. Neidich, who graduated from Yale College in 1975, regularly performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor throughout the world.

The Yale Collection of Musical Instruments, one of the foremost institutions of its kind, preserves and exhibits musical instruments from antiquity to the present. Many instruments are maintained in playing condition and are featured in performances and demonstrations in the fine acoustic of the upstairs gallery, the venue for this performance.

The program will be presented twice: Sunday, December 2 at 3 pm and Monday, December 3 at 8 pm. Both concerts take place at the Collection of Musical Instruments (15 Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven). MORE

Hung-Kuan Chen performs Brahms, Schumann & more Nov. 28

The Horowitz Piano Series at the Yale School of Music presents a recital by the pianist Hung-Kuan Chen on Wednesday, November 28. Chen, a faculty member hailed by the Boston Globe as “a deeply probing, imaginative player with an enormous palette of tone colors,” will perform a program of music featuring masterpieces from the Classical and Baroque periods.

This concert will open with two pieces by Mozart. The Fragment of a Suite in C major, K. 399 recalls the operatic overtures of the French Baroque with its slow opening followed by vivacious counterpoint. The lively spirit is followed by another Baroque reference, A Little Gigue in G Major, K. 574.

The first half closes with Schumann’s masterful Fantasie in C major, Op. 17.

Brahms’s Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118 will open the second half of the concert. This late work is sometimes thought to reflect the composer’s emotional state after the deaths of his sister Elise and close friend Elizabeth von Herzogenberg.

Chen will conclude the recital with Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka, arranged for piano from the composer’s 1911 ballet.

Horowitz Piano Series closes season with Robert Blocker on March 21

The Horowitz Piano Series at the Yale School of Music presents a recital by the pianist Robert Blocker, on Wednesday, March 21. Blocker, hailed as “a pianist of purified technique and enormous sensitivity,” will perform a diverse program of music from the Baroque to the present day, including pieces by two Yale faculty composers.

Each half will open with musical fantasies, beginning with Haydn’s Fantasia in C major, Hob. XVII:4. The first half will also feature Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, Op. 12, a collection of eight character pieces, and Martin Bresnick’s Strange Devotion. Bresnick’s work, which is dedicated to Blocker, was inspired by Francisco de Goya’s etching Extraña Devoción, from the series Caprichos Enfáticos. Bresnick is a member of the School of Music’s composition faculty.

The second half of the concert reaches back to the Baroque, opening with J.S. Bach’s Fantasia in C minor. Next will be another collection from the Romantic period: Brahms’s masterful Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118.

The concert will close with another piece by a Yale faculty member, Ezra Laderman; Decade was written for Robert Blocker after his first ten years as Dean of the School of Music. After Blocker premiered the work in 2009, the Hartford Courant wrote: Decade is a new piano work worth getting excited about.” MORE

Yale Brass Trio performs music from the Renaissance to Rachmaninoff

Nov. 1 concert also features pianist Mihae Lee and composer Ezra Laderman

The Yale School of Music presents the Yale Brass Trio in a Faculty Artist Series concert on Tuesday, November 1. The trio brings together three Yale School of Music faculty members who have all established high-profile careers of their own: Allan Dean, trumpet; William Purvis, French horn; and Scott Hartman, trombone.

For this performance, which explores music from the Renaissance to today, they will be joined by pianist Mihae Lee.

The concert will begin with early English music and works by the French Renaissance composer Guillaume Dufay. Ezra Laderman’s Trio for Brass, written in 2005, will offer a 21st-century contrast. Laderman, a faculty colleague of the performers, is a former dean of the School of Music, the president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a composer who has won three Guggenheim Fellowships, the Prix de Rome, and Rockefeller and Ford Foundation grants.

Fans of the Romantic period will enjoy Rachmaninoff’s Elegy for trombone and piano and Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces for horn and piano. The concert will conclude with tangos by Astor Piazzolla, which – along with the early Renaissance pieces – were transcribed for brass trio by Allan Dean.

Violinist Brian Lewis performs Schumann, Milhaud, Avalon, and more Oct. 11

Brian Lewis, violinThe Yale School of Music presents violinist Brian Lewis in a Faculty Artist Recital on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 8 pm in Morse Recital Hall (located in Sprague Hall at 470 College Street). Now in his second year as a visiting professor at Yale, Lewis will perform violin sonatas by Schumann, Milhaud, and Robert Avalon, as well as music by Copland and Robert Russell Bennett. He will be joined by pianist Laura Kennedy.

Lewis and Kennedy will play Darius Milhaud’s Sonata No. 2; Schumann’s Sonata No. 1 in A minor, Op. 105; and the Connecticut premiere of Robert Avalon’s Violin Sonata, written in 1983. They will also perform the Hoe-Down from Copland’s Rodeo and Robert Russell Bennett’s jubilant Hexapoda: Five Studies in Jitteroptera, the greatest crowd-pleaser from a composer best known for his Broadway orchestrations.

“Few can match Lewis for an honest virtuosity that supremely serves the music,” raves the Topeka Capital-Journal. “This is artistry that isn’t to be missed.”

About Brian Lewis

One of the most versatile violinists on the current scene, Brian Lewis is an exceptionally gifted and charismatic artist. Much sought after as a performer and teacher, Mr. Lewis concertizes and teaches around the globe. He has released six CDs, most recently for Delos as soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Lewis began his violin studies at the age of four. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Juilliard, studying with the renowned pedagogue Dorothy DeLay. Mr. Lewis holds the David and Mary Winton Green Chair in String Performance and Pedagogy at The University of Texas at Austin. He is also Artistic Director of the Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies at the Juilliard School, concertmaster of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra in Houston, founding member of the Texas Piano Quartet, and Artistic Director of the Starling Distinguished Violinist Series at UT. Brian Lewis is in his second year as the Class of ’57 Visiting Professor in Music at the Yale School of Music.
