Pianist David Kaplan ’07MM, ’08MMA, ’14DMA has been appointed Lecturer in Piano for the 2016-2017 academic year at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

Kaplan has appeared in programs presented by the Ravinia Festival, National Gallery of Art, Tanglewood Music Center, Mostly Mozart Festival, and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, among others. He is a core member of Decoda, an Affiliate Ensemble of Carnegie Hall, and is the artistic director of Lyrica Chamber Music, a concert series in Chatham Township, New Jersey.

In March 2015, Kaplan presented New Dances of the League of David, a piano suite that juxtaposes contemporary works with Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6, at Le Poisson Rouge, in New York. Among those from whom Kaplan solicited new music for the suite are Yale School of Music faculty composers Martin Bresnick and Hannah Lash ’12AD, and YSM alumni Samuel Carl Adams ’10MM, Timo Andres ’07BA ’09MM, Ted Hearne ’08MM, Andrew Norman ’09AD, Caroline Shaw ’07MM, and Augusta Read Thomas MM. Anthony Tommasini included Kaplan’s performance on The New York Times’ list of “The Best Classic Music of 2015.”

Throughout his time at Yale, Kaplan studied with Claude Frank. Prior to enrolling at Yale, Kaplan studied with Walter Ponce at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and, by way of a Fulbright grant, studied conducting with Lutz Köhler at the Universität der Künste Berlin.

The cellist Ashley Bathgate took her bow at Le Poisson Rouge last Tuesday after the premiere of “Ash,” an evening-long work inspired by Bach’s six suites for solo cello. Then she squinted into the dimmed nightclub and made the usual hand motion of a performer beckoning the composer to share in the applause.

But Ms. Bathgate’s gesture did not just bring out a composer: It sparked a procession of dark-clothed men in their 30s who ascended the stage and lined up, smiling, behind her like a genial security detail. The men belonged to Sleeping Giant, the composers’ collective that produced “Ash” and comprises six members: Timo Andres, Christopher Cerrone, Jacob Cooper, Ted Hearne, Robert Honstein and Andrew Norman.

The men met as students at Yale University and dispersed to different corners of the country, each making an individual mark on the new-music scene. But for works like “Ash,” which Ms. Bathgate commissioned under the working title “Bach Unwound,” the composers come together, in gargantuan email chains and in Google Hangout sessions lasting hours, to collaborate on multi-movement pieces that seek to preserve their own voices within a common dramatic arc. New Music Ensemble eighth blackbird Collaborates With Collective Sleeping Giant

The boundaries between composer and performer crumble with each passing year. Or maybe they were fictional all along.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, eighth blackbird, one of the world’s premier new-music ensembles, performs “Hand Eye,” a six-movement work by Brooklyn-based composer collective Sleeping Giant. The concert takes place at Yale University’s Morse Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. (All six members of Sleeping Giant — Timo Andres, Christopher Cerrone, Jacob Cooper, Ted Hearne, Robert Honstein, Andrew Norman — have ties to the Yale School of Music.)

The Yale School of Music is honored to welcome the Grammy Award-winning chamber ensemble eighth blackbird on October 19 and 20 for a concert as well as a talk and master class.

The first event, combining a master class and talk, takes place Monday, Oct. 19 and is free and open to the public. This precedes the sextet’s performance on Tuesday, Oct. 20, which features music by the Yale alumni composer collective Sleeping Giant. Both events take place in Morse Recital Hall, located in Sprague Hall at 470 College Street.

Master Class & Talk

On Monday, Oct. 19, eighth blackbird will coach YSM students in two classic pieces of the chamber repertoire, Igor Stravinsky’s L’histoire du Soldat and Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. The master class will focus on theatrical elements such as movement, choreography, stage presence, visual communication, and other elements. MORE

eighth-blackbirdThe Oneppo Chamber Music Series at the Yale School of Music presents the new-music ensemble eighth blackbird on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:30 pm. The acclaimed eighth blackbird will perform Hand Eye, and evening-length work by composition collective Sleeping Giant.

The six pieces that comprise Hand Eye are each written by a single member of the collective: Checkered Shade by Timo Andres, South Catalina by Chris Cerrone, Conduit by Robert Honstein, Mine, Mime, Meme by Andrew Norman, By-By Huey by Ted Hearne, and Cast by Jacob Cooper.

Sleeping Giant is “rapidly gaining notice for their daring innovations, stylistic range and acute attention to instrumental nuance” (WQXR). All six members are graduates of the Yale School of Music; the collective was formed in New Haven and named for the eponymous park in Hamden. The pieces of Hand Eye were inspired by works of art in the private collection of Maxine and Stuart Frankel. MORE

Three YSM composers win Morton Gould Young Composer Awards

Three Yale School of Music composers are among the recipients of the 2015 ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Awards: Timo Andres ’07 BA, ’09 MM (Palo Alto, CA); Katherine Balch (San Diego, CA); and Brian Heim (Brownsville, MN).

All 28 award recipients will be recognized at the annual ASCAP Concert Music Awards at Merkin Concert Hall in New York on May 21, 2015. The ASCAP composer/judges were Lisa Bielawa, Steven Burke, Sebastian Currier, Daniel Felsenfeld, Robert Paterson, Alvin Singleton, and Aleksandra Vrebalov.

New Music USA has just awarded $311,000 to 57 projects in its second round of project grants. The recipients are “an eclectic mix of creative, provocative, and immensely talented artists [that] captures just a glimpse of the impressive efforts of artists working across the country today.

As in the first round of grants, the recipients include numerous alumni and faculty of the Yale School of Music, such as cellist Ashley Bathgate, composers Timo Andres and Andrew Norman. MORE

Praised for his “acute ear” (New York Times) and “stubborn nose” (New Yorker) composer and pianist Timo Andres offers a new song cycle specifically created for fellow rising-star composers and multi-instrumentalists Gabriel Kahane, Ted Hearne, Becca Stevens and Nathan Koci. A multi-movement work inspired by old fashioned American parlor songs, Andres has invented his own set of “work songs” set to texts having to do with facets of professions, jobs and labor. The song arrangements are tailored to the unique strengths of the group, with the singers joining in on guitars, keyboards, accordion and banjo. The program will also include individual work by each of the other gifted composers in the collective, all arranged for the quintet to perform together.

Composer Timo Andres goes for the beauty

Timo Andres is a fastidious generator of beauty. Most obviously it is musical beauty, as Andres, a composer and pianist who is not yet 30, is a prodigy who was improvising on songs at the age of 6, graduated from Juilliard and Yale, has a full plate of commissioned works, and has released two albums that have provoked comparisons to John Adams and Charles Ives.

His second record, last year’s “Home Stretch,” boldly fills in the absent left hand of Mozart’s “Coronation” Concerto and also offers up a 14-minute “Paraphrase on Themes of Brian Eno.”

It is a résumé that made Andres a logical choice to be part of Liquid Music, sponsored by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra to expand the boundaries of classical music composition and performance. On Friday and Saturday nights, he will unveil his new “Work Songs” cycle, composed for a group of handpicked fellow singer-songwriters, in the Music Room at the SPCO Center. MORE

The N.C. Symphony opens an adverturous season in September

When I asked the new general manager and the artistic administrator of the North Carolina Symphony what they might do to reach a younger generation of music fans, they replied, at first, with an awkward pause. Flyers at rock clubs like Kings, maybe? Publicizing $10 student tickets more? Commercials on college radio stations? Anything?

In truth, Amy Russell and Martin Sher have already done the hard work to attract new music fans to the symphony, as the newly announced lineup of the next season greatly expands the mission and repertoire of the local outfit. Now they just need to sell it. They’re still working on that part.

The symphony’s own press release buries the real news, so you have to dig past the announcement of chestnuts like Handel’s Messiah and a Rachmaninoff piano concerto to get to the excitement that the next season, which begins in September, brings: They’ll play two new commissions by Judd Greenstein ’04 MM and Sarah Kirkland Snider ’05 MM, the co-directors of indie classical powerhouse New Amsterdam Records. They created the label in 2008 to give young composers and musicians grounded in other genres a place to release their first records. Time Out NY called the label “the focal point of the post-classical scene.” MORE
