Ettore Causa featured in new Pro Classical video

YSM faculty member Ettore Causa is featured in Viola con Variazioni, a new video presented by Pro Classical. The video, subtitled Ettore Causa: Fragments of a Violist, focuses on Causa’s approach to performing and his musical influences. A member of the YSM faculty since 2009, Italian-born Causa is considered one of the most brilliant violists performers and pedagogues of our time, having been awarded multiple international prizes, with solo and recital appearances throughout the world, and two albums on the Claves record label.

In the video profile, Causa discusses how he discovered the viola and his modern French instrument, his teacher Alberto Lysy, how he selects repertoire to perform, his teaching and collaboration with his colleagues at Yale, and his passion for photography. In addition, the video features a soundtrack of Causa performing various works including Robert Schumann’s Viola Concerto. MORE

New videos: John Adams conducts the Yale Philharmonia

Phil-Adams_0136-webComposer and conductor John Adams visited the Yale School of Music in October 2014. His weeklong residency culminated in two concerts featuring Adams conducting the Yale Philharmonia. Each concert featured Adams’ own music alongside works by Stravinsky and Beethoven.

The program included Adams’ Beethoven-inspired piece Absolute Jest, performed alongside Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 and Stravinsky’s Orpheus. A concerto for string quartet and orchestra, Absolute Jest also featured the Brentano String Quartet in its debut year as YSM’s quartet-in-residence. MORE

The Soldier’s Tale: full performance now available to watch on demand

SoldiersTale_0431The Yale School of Music is pleased to present an on-demand stream of Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale, a co-production with Yale School of Drama. The stream will be available for six months beginning June 1, 2014.


In April, the Yale in New York concert series, under the artistic direction of David Shifrin, presented a new collaboration between the two performing arts schools: a fully-staged original production and new translation of Igor Stravinsky’s darkly comic The Soldier’s Tale. Performances took place Tuesday, April 1 in Morse Recital Hall on the Yale campus, and Sunday, April 6 in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. One of the largest collaborations between the two schools, the production brought together School of Music faculty and student musicians with the School of Drama faculty, student, and alumni designers, actors, and technicians. “Why Music?” video wins awards

13-090 YSM - Production StillsThe School of Music’s overture video “Why Music?” is the winner of two Internet Advertising Competition Awards. The video won Best Education Online Video and Best Music Online Video in the competition produced by the Web Marketing Association.

The awards were announced today on the Web Marketing Association’s website. Austin Kase ’11 BA, the School of Music’s video producer, wrote and directed the video. WATCH

The Internet Advertising Competition awards recognize excellence in online advertising. Entries compete head-to-head with other entries in their specific category, and are judged based on creativity, innovation, impact, design, copywriting, use of the medium, and memorability.

New Concert Video: “Frau Trude”

Check out this new concert video of “Frau Trude,” a 10-minute opera by composition student Daniel Schlosberg ’14MMA.

Adapted from the Grimm fairy tale of the same name, the opera tells the story of a witch named Frau Trude, who turns naughty children into logs for her fire.  The opera was performed on October 3rd in Sprague Hall as part of YSM’s New Music New Haven concert series.
