Serena Blocker
Lecturer in English Yale School of Music
At YSM Since: 2001
Award(s): Certificate of Appreciation for Excellence in Teaching from Yale University (2005)
My primary goal as a teacher of English Language Skills is to enrich learning through a positive, nurturing environment while involving students in acquiring competence which will further their refinement of writing, reading, and speaking English. At the same time, I would hope to instill self-confidence, curiosity, and motivation in all areas of their study at YSM. Regarding the teaching of English, in particular, I am inspired by Ruth Colvin’s thoughts in I Speak English. Colvin writes that ‘effective acquisition of a new language is not only a mental process but an emotional one as well, since language is a part of culture, and learning involves the whole person in community with others.’”
