Description
The case of this octave spinet is of cypress; the soundboard is of coniferwood, probably fir or spruce. The exterior of the case and lid are painted in a dappled pattern on a yellow background. The interior of the lid and the folding keyboard cover are painted with arabesques, leaves and flowers over a lighter background. There is no stand. The projecting keyboard has a compass of four octaves with a short octave C/E to c’’’. There is one choir of strings at 4' pitch. The natural keys are covered with boxwood, the sharps are of dark-stained walnut. Inscription of "Alari" refers to Gianantonio Alari, a Roman harpsichord maker, fl. 1700.

Inscribed on a cartouche in the center of the nameboard: "ABEL = ADAM / MDCLVII"; inscribed on reverse of the nameboard: "Alari"; inscribed in ink on reverse of the nameboard is also inscribed in ink: "Restored at 7 Bayley Street, London, Sept. 1879 by Arnold Dolmetsch".
