Description
Spike fiddle of ivory and hardwood, native to central Thailand. A long neck is attached to a cylidrical body covered in python skin. The handle and pegbox are covered with ivory. A decorative boss and four notches are carved into the ivory at the base of the pegbox. Two silk strings are attached to two front-mounted ivory pegs.
The saw duang is played upright, resting on the leg, with the bowhairs passing behind the strings.
The bow (Collection number 5051.1960) is slightly curved and tapered. Each end is capped with a turned finial of ivory. The hair is stretched from the tip to an ivory button mounted in the bow 14 cm from the end.
