Description

Bentside spinet with one choir of strings at 8' pitch. The case is veneered with mahogany, with a beechwood wrestplank and a bottom (a later replacement) of mahogany veneer plywood. The lid is of solid mahogany. The keywell, jackrail, and inside of the case above the soundboard are decorated with band marquetry of lighter wood. An inlaid cartouche in the center of the nameboard is inscribed: "Johannes Hitchcock Londini Fecit". The hinges and lock are of brass. The instrument is supported by a stand consisting of two straight-leg trestles connected by a single stretcher.

The protruding keyboard has a compass of five octaves, GG-g'''. The natural keys are covered with ivory with molded wood fronts; the sharps are of ebony. The bridges are of beech. The hitchpin rail and pearwood jacks (voiced in Delrin) are Challis replacements.

Inscriptions

Inscribed on inlaid cartouche in the center of the nameboard: "Johannes Hitchcock Londini Fecit"; inscribed on the lowest key: "Culliford No. 10"; inscribed in pencil on the front edge of the wrestplank: "No. 10"; inscribed on the front edge of the wrestplank: "Rebuilt by John Challis, 1955.".
