American classical music has long been indebted to the European tradition. This concert features European composers that had major influence on the American music scene.

Antonín Dvorák lived was the head of the first music conservatory in the United States, encouraging American composers to use folk music to create a national style. Ernst Bloch was the president of Cleveland Institute of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, while composing his distinctive music. Amy Beach, the lone American composer on the program, was educated in the European tradition while studying at the New England Conservatory.
