Oboist, clarinetist, and pianist win Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition

This year’s Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition, held on April 6, yielded three winners: oboist Jini Baik ’24MM, pianist Leanne Jin ’24MM, and clarinetist Nicole Martin ’25MM. Each will appear as a soloist with the Yale Philharmonia during the 2024-2025 season. Baik performed Mozart’s Oboe Concerto in C major, K. 314; Jin performed Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, and Martin performed Magnus Lindberg’s Clarinet Concerto.

Laurel Gagnon ’25MMA, who performed Bartok’s Second Violin Concerto, and Jillian Coscio ’25MM, who performed and Frank Martin’s Ballade for Flute and Piano, were named alternates.

Competition performances were presented with the school’s collaborative pianists and adjudicated by violinist Carol Lieberman ’67MM ’70MMA ’74DMA, Professor Emerita at the College of the Holy Cross; violist Abhijit Sengupta ’94BA, Director of Artistic Planning at Carnegie Hall; and pianist Aaron Wunsch ’99BA, Director of Keyboard Studies at The Juilliard School.
