Profiles in Persistence: Women of YSM

The Yale School of Music’s first graduating class numbered four. Among those graduates who earned a bachelor of music degree in 1894 was Virginia Brisac Moore. Twenty-five years before the School of Music was established, the Yale School of Art opened its doors to men and women. It was another 100 years before women were admitted to Yale College.

The fall 2019-winter 2020 issue of Music at Yale includes a feature titled “Profiles in Persistence: Women of YSM,” which acknowledges, in the spirit of the university’s yearlong 50WomenAtYale150 celebration, a modest number of individuals who collectively reflect the achievements of so many other women alumni.
