Fostering gender diversity through new work

Carrie Koffman, lecturer in applied saxophone at YSM, and composer and YSM alum Roshanne Etezady ’99MM are leading a project of the North American Saxophone Alliance that’s focused on education and gender equity and involves a new commission. The Alliance has commissioned Etezady for a new work for virtuosic soloist and middle school band that will give students who are at an early stage in their musical life the rare and valuable opportunity to engage with top performers.

Faculty, alums win Grammy Awards

Several YSM faculty and alums won Grammy Awards on Sunday, March 14. 

Bass-baritone Dashon Burton ’11MM won a Grammy Award in the “Best Classical Solo Vocal Album” category for his recording, with soprano Sarah Brailey and the Experiential Chorus and Orchestra led by conductor James Blachly, of Ethel Smyth’s The Prison.

Major gift renames Yale Collection of Musical Instruments, enables enhancements

We are pleased to announce that Timothy A. Steinert ’82BA and his wife, Lixia Zhang, have made a major gift to the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments. Mr. Steinert is the great-great-grandson of Morris Steinert, whose donation of musical instruments to Yale in 1900 established the Collection and who founded the New Haven Symphony in 1894. In addition to Timothy, descendants of Morris Steinert who have attended Yale include Alan Steinert ’23BA, John A. Steinert ’93MBA, and Alexandra Steinert-Evoy ’90MDiv.

Violinist Augustin Hadelich appointed to Yale School of Music faculty

The eminent violinist Augustin Hadelich will join the Yale School of Music in fall 2021 as a distinguished member of the violin faculty. Mr. Hadelich will work initially with four students while offering master classes to all YSM violinists and string players. Mr. Hadelich’s credentials are without equal,” YSM faculty violinist Ani Kavafian said.

School appoints first Director of Equity, Belonging, and Student Life

Dr. Albert R. Lee has been appointed Associate Professor of Music, Adjunct and the school’s inaugural Director of Equity, Belonging, and Student Life. He will teach two courses annually in the academic-studies area and will guide the school as it works with the university on long-term commitments to belonging. Dr. Lee will contribute to the development of the curriculum, particularly as relates to equity and belonging and participate in the admissions process.
